Established in 2018, Galeria Richard Vanderaa is a secondary market gallery founded by Dutch art dealer Richard van der AA. The gallery specializes in works on paper by internationally recognized Modern, Post-War, and Contemporary European and American artists, alongside a focused program dedicated to Catalan and Spanish abstraction of the 1950s and 1960s and conceptual practices of the 1970s.

With a strong curatorial approach, the gallery represents the Estates of Alberto Fabra, Jaume Faixó, Fernando Lerín, and Joan Puig Manera, and regularly features works by artists such as Pic Adrian, Joan March, and Guillem Rubió. Through its program, the gallery contributes to the reassessment and international visibility of historically significant yet underrecognized artistic positions.

Works on paper form the core of the gallery’s activity. These unique and often rare pieces provide direct insight into an artist’s practice and offer collectors and institutions the opportunity to acquire museum-quality works at accessible levels. The gallery works closely with estates, archives, and private collections to source historically relevant material with strong provenance and exhibition history.

Richard van der AA has built an international reputation through research, rediscovery, and institutional collaboration. He identified what is considered the earliest known print by R.B. Kitaj, now held in the collection of the Jewish Museum in Vienna, and collaborated with the British Museum on the catalogue raisonné of Kitaj’s prints.

His curatorial work includes the reintroduction and contextualization of significant artists. In 2015, he introduced Monika Buch in Spain, organizing her first exhibition in collaboration with Galería José de la Mano in Madrid. Buch, the only Spanish woman to study at the Hochschule für Gestaltung in Ulm—founded by Max Bill on Bauhaus principles—holds a key place in postwar abstraction.

In 2019, he rediscovered Héctor García Miranda, a founding member of the Groupe de Recherche d’Art Visuel (G.R.A.V.) in Paris, and reestablished his work in collaboration with Galería José de la Mano. In 2021, he introduced the French artist Ode Bertrand to Spain, organizing her first exhibition in the Peninsula. Bertrand is a leading figure in geometric abstraction, with works held in major public collections including the Centre Pompidou.

In 2025, in collaboration with curator Alfonso de la Torre, Richard van der AA organized the first retrospective in 24 years of Catalan artist Jaume Faixó at Fundació Valvi in Girona. That same year, he placed a key work by Enric Planasdurà in the collection of the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía in Madrid. The painting, originating from the artist’s Informalist period, was previously exhibited in the Spanish Pavilion at the 1958 Venice Biennale, a landmark moment in postwar Spanish art.

The gallery works closely with collectors, advisors, and institutions and has placed works in major public and private collections across Europe and the United States, such as the Sprengel Museum in Hannover, the Jewish Museum in Viena, the Museu de la Garrotxa in Olot, the Museu de l'Empordà in Figueres, the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Buenos Aires, the Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya in Barcelona, the Museu d'Art de Girona and the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia in Madrid, among others.
